In the international trading of agricultural commodities, more and more goods are being handled in big bags (Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers or FIBC) instead of the more conventional woven PP or jute bags. These big bags are labor and space saving, but do not protect commodities against infestation, molds and moisture ingress.
To protect the commodities, big bags are placed inside shipping containers, often on pallets and are fumigated before leaving port in accordance with local sanitary regulations.
These containers stay at the port for days while they are being fumigated. Shipping containers are not gastight, thus, allowing fumigants to leak out and shortening the exposure times. Also, in many developing countries, once the commodities arrive, restrictions on fumigation make the re-fumigation of a container very costly.
As a result, infestation and high aflatoxin levels maybe observed upon the commodities’ arrival to destination. When this occurs, both exporter and importer suffer claims, trade disputes and additional expenses.
The patented GrainPro Cocoon Cargo™ addresses these issues by maximizing the effectiveness of phosphine or carbon dioxide (CO2) in fumigating commodities loaded inside big bags. It incorporates the principles of Ultra Hermetic™ storage (UHS) and modified atmosphere.
Made from sturdy and durable 1250 g/m² reinforced PVC, the GrainPro Cocoon Cargo™ is designed for simple hermetic storage. It is equipped with an inlet port to allow the flushing of CO2 or phosphine and an outlet port for the release of oxygen, thus allowing modified atmosphere applications.
The GrainPro Cocoon Cargo™ has the same dimension as a 20’ shipping container and can be loaded with 10 large or 20 regular flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBC) or big bags. To facilitate the easy loading of big bags with the use of a forklift, the zipper of a GrainPro Cocoon Cargo™ is located near the ground.
