GrainPro Self Verifying Cocoons™ is designed for toxic-free fumigation and safe storage of agricultural commodities. G-HF Self Verifying Cocoons™ are either standard size or custom-made to enclose stacks of boxed, crated, or bagged produce. G-HF Self Verifying Cocoons™ use a specially-developed durable and flexible plastic liner that has low permeability to oxygen (O2), carbon dioxide (CO2), and moisture.
The Fumigation Principle:
The commodity is loaded into gastight G-HF Self Verifying Cocoons™ of flexible PVC for treatment. Once the Cocoon is closed with the special gastight zipper, CO2 is flushed into the Cocoon. Insertion of the gas will take place at a bottom gas inlet, whereas a top outlet enables the release of the lighter O2. The amount of CO2 inserted should reach a concentration of 90% (leaving only 2% O2). This initial concentration will kill all living insects, larvae and eggs within an exposure time of a maximum of 10 days, and as little as two days, depending on temperature, commodity and target insect species.
As a rule, CO2 is much more effective at higher temperatures than at lower temperatures. The concentration of the CO2 can be easily determined with a portable GrainPro O2 analyzer or with a CO2 analyzer.
This technology fits most situations where methyl bromide and/or phosphine are excluded from use as fumigants for environmental, insect resistance, or health-food reasons.
The Storage Principle
All the agricultural products or their derivatives targeted for this storage system have prolonged shelf life due to their maintenance of a constant moisture content in the ultra hermetic environment. In contrast, under conventional storage conditions, they are all susceptible to damage and quality deterioration by stored product insects and fungi including mycotoxin.
Furthermore, many of the products are subject to changes due to oxidation during storage, having an adverse effect on color, taste or nutritive value. In contrast, storage under modified atmospheres whereby the oxygen in the air surrounding the commodity is replaced by either carbon dioxide or nitrogen, prevents the development of insects, growth of fungi and oxidation processes within the commodity.
This method of applying modified atmosphere is termed the “flush and maintenance method”. The system is provided with inlet and outlet ports at the bottom and top respectively enabling the module to be flushed from the bottom with carbon dioxide or nitrogen from tank or cylinders while the air is expelled from the top. Additional equipment that may be provided is a continuously operating CO2 monitor that measures concentrations of CO2 within the module; when the level rises above a pre-set limit, the controller activates a solenoid valve connected to a gas cylinder that injects gas into the module, thereby maintaining the desired low oxygen concentration.This method of applying modified atmosphere is termed the “flush and maintenance method”. In order to be effective, treatment has to take place at temperatures of at least 25° C.
